Milgard School of Business has an outstanding opportunity for an eLearning Instructional Designer and Technologist with a passion for teaching and learning, a love for solving exciting instructional challenges, a desire to create innovative e-learning experiences, and the collaborative nature to support a variety of faculty, courses and programs. The eLearning Instructional Designer and Technologist provides research-based, learner-centered program and course design support, consultation in effective online and digital pedagogy for instructors teaching in hybrid and distance format, faculty development and training to a wide range of faculty subject matter experts and scholars, and learning technology expertise and direction in the Milgard School of Business at the University of Washington Tacoma. The eLearning Instructional Designer will have direct responsibility for instructional design, project management, faculty mentorship and collaboration, and administration of virtual digital lab at the Center for Business Analytics.
This person supports distance, hybrid and flipped course design projects, solves instructional challenges encountered in the delivery of distance and hybrid learning environments, and advises faculty on effective practices and instructional design methods.
Reporting directly to the Director of the Center for Business Analytics, the person in this position will regularly communicate with the Director and the Administrator of the Milgard School of Business.
PROGRAM & COURSE DESIGN AND FACULTY CONSULTATION
Confer with subject matter experts to identify and determine needs of the course and appropriate method of delivery based on what the students or end- users need to learn.
Identify and plan appropriate instructional curriculum, learning activities, and assessment materials based on analysis of tasks, learners, and subject matter to engage and educate end users on products, product features, or other various topics, ensuring the content matches the objectives.
Provide instructional design consultation, guidance and support to faculty subject matter experts in the design and development of academically effective, media-rich distance and hybrid programs, courses, modules and any other course materials (e.g. integration of videos, discussion boards, rubrics, quizzes, exercises, scripts, storyboards, simulations, games and web- based training) for undergraduate, graduate, continuing education, and open online course (i.e. MOOC) learners.
Facilitates the use of effective instructional approaches in the design and development of distance, hybrid and flipped courses.
Collaborates with faculty to ensure learning objectives are met and pedagogical approaches are considered.
Support faculty in the integration of emerging technologies to facilitate engaging teaching practices and student learning experiences.
Provide instructional design guidance and support to faculty to include responding to requests for assistance, troubleshooting, designing online program templates, facilitating training, group workshops, learn discussions and maintaining the integrity of online courses.
Work closely with faculty to create the course development plan, project milestones, and the production timeline.
Work with faculty to design the overall course blueprint and learning components, including but not limited to course content, formative and summative assessments, peer reviews, and online learning activities.
Apply research-based learning theories, proven instructional design principles, online learning models, and the best practice guidelines into the online course development process.
Mentor faculty to design and produce learning objects in a variety of formats including but not limited to print, graphics, audio, video, animation, e- Learning interactive modules, etc.
Collaborate with the media team to support faculty video production needs, which includes but not limited to studio media production, pre-recorded lectures, live event recording, synchronous webinar recording, and video post- production.
Facilitate faculty to develop or redesign the course syllabus, the course event calendar, and the online course navigation to support quality online course delivery and enhance student's online learning experience.
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
Develop and support the creation of training materials, promotional materials, teaching aids, such as training handbooks, demonstration models, multimedia visual aids, computer tutorials and reference works to better facilitate faculty in adopting new learning technologies and pedagogical innovations for quality online course development and delivery.
Provide faculty development offerings which foster adoption of effective practices for online course design and teaching.
Create design documents that describe business needs, audience needs, high level tasks, delivery content, supporting materials, copyright and evaluations/ assessments.
Coordinate online learning related events and training workshop, which includes but not limited to event planning, scheduling, promotion, delivery, tweeting/blogging, recording, media archiving, etc.
MANAGE DAILY OPERATIONS AND ADMINISTRATION
Oversees project management for courses from inception to completion, and is able to communicate progress to the Associate Dean. This also includes planning for potential concerns and preparing work-arounds to meet deadlines.
Author high-level, engaging course design within the Canvas LMS, and provide high level LMS support to faculty and students.
Conducts quality assurance reviews on courses and identify required revisions.
Assists in monitoring the review of online courses for standards, consistency, and quality
Ensures college wide awareness of, and compliance with, federal and state distance learning regulations, as well as licensing and copyright laws.
Administers the CBA's Virtual Digital Transformation Lab.
Participate in the development and administration of applicable policies, processes and procedures, strategic plans, goals and programmatic activities pertaining to online and hybrid learning at the Milgard School of Business
Manage part time resources such as student workers as needed.
Develop status/progress report/project time log and present metrics data on a regular basis (e.g. weekly, monthly, quarterly, annually, etc.).
Collect faculty's feedback to improve services offered.
Analyze census data, identify campus trends, and communicate online education related issues as needed.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Maintain current knowledge of distance education trends, innovations, research and best practices. Partner with faculty and staff at the Teaching and Learning Research Center (TLRC) and conduct educational research projects relates to digital learning and online education.
Conduct pilot experiments with faculty and implement new online pedagogical innovations and educational technologies.
Present the latest research findings related to online education and successful models demonstrated at peer institutions.
Represent the Milgard School of Business as a focus for digital teaching and learning expertise both internally and externally.
Provide support to the Office of eLearning to include completing Quality Matters reviews of online courses at Milgard School of Business, participating in Distance Education committee work, assisting in institutional accreditation, compliance and reporting requirements, departmental assessments.
Work closely with UW Tacoma and UW Information Technology, eLearning, library and other departments to promote digital learning innovations and to provide everyday online faculty support services including but not limited to online teaching consultation, manage course review activities, and develop online teaching resources (i.e. the best practice guides, training tutorials, and the online teaching toolkits).
Interface with students, faculty, staff and community concerning Center resources, activities and collaboration possibilities.
Interact with instructional designers from other schools and UW campuses and contribute to the Instructional Design and Faculty Support (IDFS) group among the University of Washington campuses.
Participate in online learning communities, such as Online Learning Consortium (OLC), Quality Matters (QM), EDUCAUSE, University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA), and United State Distance Learning Association (USDLA).
Bachelor's degree in Education, Business Management, Information Systems or Related Field.
Minimum 3 years of experience in instructional design, online teaching/learning or closely related field, preferably in a higher education institution. Demonstrated knowledge of learning and instructional design pedagocy, theories, instructional systems, and learning technologies. Experience in partnering with university faculty to design, build and evaluate hybrid/online courses using appropriate research-based instructional techniques and technologies. Familiar with the use of Learning Management Systems from an instructor's perspective, such as Canvas. Experience with the use of instructional technologies such as web conferencing, video development, anti-plagiarism software, lecture capture, web page editors, graphic software, mobile learning and copyright. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong project management, needs assessment, time management, organization, ability to multi-task, work independently, networking, strong interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently and work a flexible schedule with some evening and/or weekend work. Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic, evolving environment. Experience using computer programs such as MS Office Word, Access, Excel, Power Point. Must be comfortable with data and have an intermediate level proficiency with computer technology. Must be precise, thorough and detail-oriented. Ability to learn new eLearning & instructional technologies quickly Ability to facilitate collaboration, support, and buy-in from a variety of stakeholders
Master's degree in instructional design, curriculum design, instructional technology, educational technology or related field desired but not required.
Proven understanding of tools for teaching, including emerging technologies.
Ability to stay abreast of the changing educational technology landscape.
Teaching experience is a plus.
Familiar with the Quality Matters rubrics and its peer review model.
Familiar with professional AV, web and multimedia development production.
Familiar with the usability and accessibility guidelines and best practices in instructional design.
Knowledgeable and experienced with appropriate hardware and software used in the creation of digital media including but not limited to MS Office Suite plus Project and Camtasia, Adobe Creative Suite, Visio, Adobe Captivate, Photoshop, web page authoring and social media platforms.
