Full-time appointment in the First Year Experience with a focus in studio art/design. The new First Year Experience was designed in response to the rapid changes in art, design and technology, and the intersections between them that are occurring today. It has been crafted to provide a rigorous, integrated curriculum that reflects the diversity of our people and our learning pathways.
The First Year Experience of the Maryland Institute College of Art invites applications for this full-time faculty position with a multi-year renewable contract in a non-tenure institution beginning August 2018.
The College seeks an outstanding and accomplished artist with strong conceptual and technical understanding of their specific field of interest and an abiding interest in working with developing artists and designers from diverse backgrounds. The studio artist/designer/educator will teach eighteen credits per year (normally three courses per semester) at an art school nationally known for its dedication to teaching excellence, a rigorous liberal arts curriculum and the importance of the fine arts. Specific courses taught will include the year-long, 6 credit Forum, along with other FYE and upper level courses relevant to their field of practice.
The successful candidate will have a broad understanding of integrating practices, be knowledgeable of contemporary art/design issues and theory, and have the ability to combine theoretical, material, practical and social issues into studio pedagogy.
Professional excellence as demonstrated by a strong portfolio of work and a record of exhibition or equivalent activity
Personal commitment to teaching on a college level using pedagogical approaches that are relevant and responsive to a student body that is rich in diversity across race, ethnicity, gender and class and the intersections of these markers
Knowledgeable about contemporary art issues and theory and their relationship to broader social, cultural, economic, scientific and technological forces
Centers teaching resources and content informed by broad worldviews and cultural approaches to theory and practice that reach beyond the heavily Westernized-canon
Evidence of successful teaching a variety of art and design skill sets in both analog and digital media at the college level
Capable of teaching in multiple levels of the undergraduate program
Shows promise or proven ability to enrich the aims for diversity, equity and justice of the FYE department and the College.
Ability to work in a collaborative environment, participating in advising, institutional and departmental committee service and scheduled departmental and student activities
Successful candidate will be required to complete employment and education verifications.
Valued, but not required:
3 years of higher education teaching experience beyond graduate assistantships
A proven track record of working collaboratively alongside people from diverse cultural backgrounds, experiences, education levels and degrees of professional training
