Department Summary Urbanism Next is a research initiative of SCI that looks at the effects technological advances such as Autonomous Vehicles, E-Commerce, and the sharing economy are having, and are predicted to have, on cities. Specifically, this research looks at how these changes will produce secondary effects on development, design, economics, and social patterns. It looks at the way we live and move within the city and how this may affect the ways we value proximity and how the spatial development of cities may change. This includes exploration into the impacts on our legal, economic, and communication systems. This is a burgeoning field of work that will be tremendously important to the quality of life, health, and economic vitality of cities.
This work currently spans the disciplines of urban design, planning, architecture, landscape architecture, real estate, law, business, journalism, and labor relations. SCI has developed partners nationally in the private, public, and academic sectors and is working to further develop this network of collaborators.
