The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences has a vacant permanent fulltime position for a Professor or Associate Professor in Applied Mathematics.
The position is attached to the Department of Science and Industry Systems and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is Kongsberg.
Responsibilities and duties The successful applicant is expected to be actively engaged in both teaching, research, and student supervision, and contribute to the development of national and international networks. The person will be responsible for research, research leadership and guidance in strategic areas of the University’s network of researchers.
The department is responsible for five year M.Sc. programs in Physics and Mathematics with Teacher Education, Bachelor programs in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and 2 year Masters programs in Systems Engineering and Systems Engineering with Embedded Systems. The department also shares responsibility for Ph.D. programs in Applied Micro- and Nanosystems and in Process, Energy and Automation Engineering.
The department integrates programming and applied mathematics in most courses in mathematics and physics. Python is used as a general programming language.
The successful candidate is expected to establish an independent research program and to compete for external funding. Interactions with the department’s existing research groups in algebraic geometry or quantum technology is encouraged.
The position may be assigned teaching at all levels in the Department’s programs. The position may also be assigned teaching at other departments within University College of Southeast Norway.
The university college also considers distance learning and e-learning to be a priority area, and the successful candidate must be able to supervise and teach students using online tools and digital media.
Qualifications We are seeking a committed and independent person with a Ph.D. in algebraic geometry, applied mathematics or physics. Teaching experience at university level is required, and teaching experience at bachelor level is an advantage. A strong research network and ability to initiate and manage research projects will be regarded positively.
The successful applicant should have a broad and solid background in applied mathematics. Research expertise in applied algebraic geometry, number theory or quantum information theory is required. We are looking for a candidate with an excellent publication record and demonstrated ability for independent scientific production after the PhD. Experience from cooperation with research groups in algebraic geometry or quantum information is an advantage.
The staff at the faculty work within subject teams to a large extent, and the candidate must be motivated to share his or her knowledge and cooperate. Personal suitability for the position will be emphasized.
Our education should be research-based, both in terms of teaching practice and content. We therefore want our teachers to have experience from, or have the motivation to focus on, the development of teaching practices and the interaction between education and research.
Applicants should possess pedagogical competence involving at least a half-year Post-Graduate Certificate in Education, or a shorter university college pedagogy course, and a minimum of one year’s teaching experience. Applicants who do not possess such pedagogical qualifications may be employed on the condition that they acquire such qualifications within three years of the date of their employment. Courses within university college pedagogy will be offered.
For appointment as professor an academic level in accordance with established international or national standards is required.
The candidate should have good command of the English language, both orally and written. It is an advantage if the applicant commands one of the Scandinavian languages (Norwegian, Swedish or Danish). A successful candidate who does not speak Norwegian, Swedish or Danish is obliged to acquire a working command of Norwegian at least on level B2 within three years of being appointed.
For appointment as associate professor (førsteamanuensis), it is required that applicants hold a Norwegian doctorate within the relevant field, or equivalent foreign doctoral degree or qualifications at the same level documented by scientific production of equivalent scope and quality.

Salary Professor (code 1013): NOK 650 200 – 910 900 a year. Associate professor (førsteamanuensis) (code 1011): NOK 527 500 – 722 400 a year. Salary placement depending on seniority. In special cases, higher salary may be considered. A statutory contribution will be made to the state pension.
Additional information The Academic Appointments Board is responsible for appointments to academic positions at University College of Southeast Norway. An expert committee will evaluate the applications. On the basis of the committee’s recommendations, short-listed applicants will be called in for interviews and must be prepared to give a practice lecture.
