Position Description - The Department of Art, Architecture and Design invites applications for a full time (9–month), contractual, (2 year renewable term) Professor of Practice in Graphic Design starting Fall 2017. The candidate should be qualified to teach a variety of courses as they pertain to the field of Visual Communications. The position requires a three course per semester teaching load, including student advising, and mentoring Fusion, the student design agency. The position allows the candidate to continue professional practice.
Successful candidates will have an MFA or equivalent in Graphic Design, Interactivity Design, Visual Communications or related fields and an emerging or active design career as evidenced by current work and/or publications. The successful candidate will have a solid foundation in digital media as it relates to contemporary issues in visual art with an understanding of the role of emerging media and technology in Visual Communication, Information Design, Data Visualization and UX. The ideal candidate will promote teaching practices that encourage critical thinking, strategies for problem solving, entrepreneurial pursuits and creative independence in students, and will have the ability to advise students on academic progress and career advancement. Candidates should exhibit an understanding of design process and thinking. In addition, educational and/or experiential breadth should be a strong indicator that the candidate is able to teach in cross-disciplinary contexts applying knowledge of current design practice. Experience teaching any of the following areas is highly desirable: typography, motion graphics, multimedia, interactive design, web design, epublishing, visualization, history of design or design theory.
The Department of Art, Architecture and Design is situated in the College of Arts and Sciences and has 15 full-time faculty. Our department offers majors in Art History and Museum Studies, Studio Art, Architecture, and Design. Currently there are approximately 64 majors and 36 minors in the department, of which 28 majors and 29 minors are in Design. The Design program, in particular, offers classes in Graphic, Product, Furniture and Web design. All of our programs are firmly grounded in the Liberal Arts. As a pre-professional program, a significant percentage of our majors either enter the industry or go on to graduate school. We aim to provide a solid undergraduate education emphasizing studio culture, intellectual rigor and the art of making.
