This position is in the Department of WashU IT - MS Network Engineering. This position is for the Danforth Campus.
Installation, maintain, and repair voice, data, CATV, fiber optic, uninterruptable power supplies (UPS), distributed antenna system (DAS) and video network systems and other related network technologies. May also configure, troubleshoot and repair voice, data, coaxial lines, fiber optic circuits, video circuits, and switches. Technician performs network related work requests; performs project review prior to implementation and during project execution to ensure adherence to technical specifications and institutional low voltage structured wiring standards. Specifications are provided to employee for applications/tasks when appropriate. Troubleshooting may be performed on-site or through a network monitoring/diagnostic tool(s). More complex network problems are escalated to higher-level networking analysts or specialists or vendors for resolution.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Installs, terminates, fusion splices, cross-connects tests, and documents voice, data, coaxial, fiber optic and video cabling without supervision; ensures that applicable structured low voltage wiring standards are followed
Supports/maintains campus wide copper plant following applicable campus guidelines; perform underground communication cabling locating and documentation in GIS.
Assists departments with planning and implementation of systems and services in the data center and other critical facilities; acts as a liaison to departments utilizing data center services by providing guidance and training on the functionality of all environmental and safety systems like fire suppression, sprinkler systems, air control and monitoring systems. Performs and coordinates data center moves, adds, and changes and ensures that documentation is completed in a timely manner following departmental guidelines.
Maintains detailed records of all facility maintenance, repair, and site monitoring; coordinates and schedules all data center preventative maintenance and emergency repairs with vendors and contractors
Performs departments’ facilities and spaces quality assurance inspections when requested
Supports/maintains and troubleshoot the campus cable television (CATV) plant, UPS and DAS and perform moves, adds and changes
Perform other duties as assigned
Associate’s degree or technical certification in computer science or related field plus 2 years of relevant experience required or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Customer Service: Must possess a basic knowledge of computer and network system components and how they interface; must possess an aptitude for patience, professionalism, tactfulness, and empathy; must have the ability to assess the specific needs of the customer and be able to communicate these appropriately; must possess the ability to clearly communicate with clients and team members through written and spoken word
Project Management: Ability to complete a significant piece of a large project
Planning and Organization: Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Technical Knowledge: Understands the integration of operating systems and platforms; has an understanding of the individual components and of their relationships in data network design; proficient in the operation and relationship of network hardware and software; ability to understand functional system integration issues; understands technology components (not just based on script) to diagnose routine problems; ability to spot trends in reoccurring problems and assist in developing solutions
Technical Solution Development: Ability to implement solutions of medium complexity and follow standard operating procedures
Technical Support: Ability to independently resolve routine and non-routine problems within areas of responsibilities; ability to troubleshoot problems by probing users for information relevant to solving problem; ability to perform limited diagnostics on assigned software and hardware
Consultancy Skills: Ability to communicate with customers to discuss alternative technical solutions
Additional BICSI certifications preferred.
The hiring range for this position is $45,219 - $57,657 annually.
