Under direction of the Academic and Research Technologies Associate Director for Digital Media and Design, Digital Media Specialist Lead (79), and the (ART) Architect for Media Technologies, the Digital Media Specialist 77 advances the faculty and University research and administrative initiatives through project support in all aspects of video, media, and audio production. This position will work closely with IT Communications to develop AV training and outreach solutions for Northwestern IT.
This position is a part of the Northwestern IT A&RT Advanced Media Production studio, a group of media professionals who bring together individual strengths and a team attitude team to build high quality media projects, from ideation to completion. We provide media production from creative promotional videos to captivating online courses, pedagogical insight, live multi-camera events, photography, and beyond. As a Digital Media Specialist, this position is responsible for post-production leadership and editing skills to lead the team to craft visually striking communication media, to align edits with explicit and implicit messaging, and encourage innovation in animation and post-production techniques and applications.
Each member of our team plays leading and supporting roles in audio and video development, based on project and team needs. Estimating project costs and expenses, directing, editing and delivery of finished multi-media is key for this position. As a member of this team, you should cultivate continual growth and improvement within the group and the IT organization as a whole. This position also supervises Student Video Specialists and supports their ongoing growth and integration with the team.
Responsible for post-production: editing and reviewing projects in process, instructing and leading editors, offloading media, logging and reviewing footage and B-roll, and ensuring product quality on a per project basis.
Works in collaboration with clients and production staff to produce media products for online distribution and webcasting/video streaming. Studio production includes planning and coordinating all aspects of video production in a studio environment. Production on-location includes these elements as well as coordination with location-specific staff, departments, and activities.
Coordinates pre-production and production planning activities, including advising the client and guiding concept development when appropriate. Plan, script shoot, edit and publish a variety of video content types for educational websites, including Massive Open Online Courses and internal Northwestern promotional and didactic short-form videos. Directs assigned studio productions.
Coordinate video production needs, keeping in mind other communications projects, department needs, and event calendars. As an team member, you will utilize strong communication and collaboration skills, an attentiveness to detail, and an active awareness of the larger organizational goals which this group supports.
Assist with the schedules and budgets for assigned projects to ensure that project goals, timelines, and deliverable are achieved and tracked.
Supervise Temp Workers, Contractors, and Student Temps
Performs other duties as assigned.
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree from an established Media, Design or ART University program. OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
Two years’ experience (Internship, work study or other training work as a video and media specialist)
Experience with the maintenance, preparation, and operation of industry standard camera and audio equipment, including: Panasonic PX270s, Sony FS-700, Red Scarlet Dragon, Canon 5D Mark III & 5DSR, various recording media, Sennheiser wireless lavalier microphones, Shotgun microphones, Multichannel mixing boards, Tricaster Live Switcher, Mediasite Recorder, professional lighting gear, and other equipment in this ever-evolving field.
Experience using NLE editing software, including the following programs for post-production utilizing the Adobe Creative Suite: Premiere Pro, Audition, Media Encoder, Photoshop, After Effects, Illustrator
Experience using file formats and media encoding, including but limited to: Apple ProRes -H.264 -AVC Intra -R3D.
