The Department of Communication and Journalism at Rider University is seeking an Assistant Professor of Digital Filmmaking for a tenure track position for its Film, Television and Radio major. The applicant we seek will have experience in narrative film production, and should be comfortable in all phases of the narrative filmmaking process including pre-production, production and post-production. S/he will foster student creativity along with the technical competencies necessary for them to become successful filmmakers.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Teaching narrative filmmaking, cinematography, editing, directing and related courses at various levels in an undergraduate Digital Filmmaking program.
Demonstrating a mastery of a range of technologies and software for film production including cinematography, lighting, audio recording and editing.
Being knowledgeable of current industry practices and able to aid the department in developing professional relationships for student internships and careers.
Advising and mentoring Digital Filmmaking students
Engaging in committee service and other duties as required
Representing the Department at Open Houses and Accepted Students Day
The successful candidate will be involved in major decisions concerning curriculum development, equipment, facilities, pedagogy, and industry outreach all with the goal of continuing to build a distinctive digital filmmaking program at Rider. The successful candidate is also expected to engage in creative work and/or scholarly research, including the ability to exhibit at festivals and/or publish in academic journals, as well as a commitment to teaching and service to the University. In addition, individuals should be able to teach courses within the Department's core.
Candidates will be able to assist students in:
Developing a greater understanding of and competency with film production technologies and software.
Reviewing basic film theories and evaluating their value and importance in filmmaking.
Developing an understanding of the design and narrative structure of a variety of filmmaking styles and approaches.
Learning the creative process necessary for developing ideas and translating those ideas into viable film projects.
Integrating writing with the visual narrative to create films that are thoughtful and intelligent as well as technically polished.
Understanding and navigating the complex areas of film finance and distribution
Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
MFA or Ph.D. in Film, Communication, Media Studies or a related field.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
Evidence of professional filmmaking experience, scholarly or creative work and teaching experience at the University level is preferred.
