The School of Media and Journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking an experienced, successful Broadcast and Electronic Journalism professional to join the faculty as a Teaching Associate Professor in Spring 2019. This person will teach three courses in the fall and spring semesters and will help oversee the live production of three 30-minute news/sports programs and a daily live web-based newscast, and help coordinate numerous service and entrepreneurial projects. This is a nine-month, fixed-term position requiring no teaching during the summer. The length of the contract will be determined based on university teaching experience. Our broadcast classes are housed within the journalism area of study, recognized as one of the top journalism programs in the country. UNC-MJ has won seven EMMYs and seven Hearst national championships, including three in a row. In addition, our students have won scores of other national accolades, including a 2017 Edward R. Murrow award. The School offers high-caliber master's and PhD programs and a comprehensive undergraduate program. We have 50 full-time faculty, 27 of whom are in the School's research track. Interdisciplinary research with peers in other UNC schools and departments is encouraged.
Education and Experience:
Qualifications and Experience – 1. Significant and relevant professional experience in audio/video storytelling across multiple platforms. 2. Experience leading a student-produced television or radio newscast and university teaching experience are plusses. 3. Digital editing proficiency, particularly experience with Adobe Premiere a plus. 4. An ability to lead students to envision how to incorporate current and emerging technologies in the storytelling process, while applying the highest standards of news judgement and ethics. 5. Ability to bring applied research into the classroom and to design and facilitate dynamic learning experiences. 6. Collaborative work style along with the ability to take initiative and be resourceful to accomplish goals.
