Loyola Marymount University seeks a Director for the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP) to lead the central administrative unit responsible for encouraging and facilitating external grant and contract funding at the University. Building on existing strengths and joining a collective effort to support the advancement of research and extramural funding opportunities, the Director of ORSP will oversee the proposal development and application process, lead institutional review of awards and contracts, and work with other university administrators to develop and implement funded research policy.
Reporting to the Associate Provost for Research and Professional Development, the Director will: 1) provide leadership within the ORSP team and office workflow, 2) support the LMU community in identifying sources of external support and submission of proposals, 3) develop and implement a strategic plan for ORSP that will increase the success of external funding, 4) ensure compliance with all University and sponsor requirements, 5) liaison with offices across campus on funding initiatives and support, 6) ensure that the ORSP office remains knowledgeable and current on changing requirements of major funding agencies and programs and federal regulatory requirements governing sponsored research, and 7) develop cooperative contacts within the University and community leaders to promote collaborative interdisciplinary and interdepartmental projects. This is a twelve-month, non-faculty campus leadership position.
LMU’s Director of Office of Research and Sponsored Projects will undertake managerial responsibilities including staff and budget oversight. By displaying a strong work ethic and an ability to inspire others, the Director will act in the best interests of LMU’s students, faculty, the institution, and its mission. Thus, collegiality and strong interpersonal skills are absolutely necessary to contribute to and lead in this important work. Highly developed organizational skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse team of professionals are also essential. Qualified candidates should be familiar with LMU’s mission, vision, and values, and possess knowledge of issues that impact higher education, including diversity and multiculturalism.
To serve as Director, typically a Ph.D degree is required. Demonstrated knowledge of sponsored projects, experience in writing and submitting successful proposals, expertise in utilizing electronic tools for preparing, submitting and managing applications and awards, and identification of appropriate sources of funding support is required. Strong candidates will exhibit exemplary communication skills and an ability to work collaboratively with administrators, faculty, and staff. Five or more years of experience in in university sponsored projects is strongly preferred, as is experience in staff and budget management. Certification as a Certified Research Administrator (CRA) or Certified Pre-award Research Administrator (CPRA) is also highly desired.
