Loyola Marymount University seeks a Director of Study Abroad to oversee, develop, promote and evaluate a wide range of study abroad and international experiences for LMU and non-LMU students. The Director is responsible for developing and implementing strategic initiatives that directly align study abroad programming with the university’s academic objectives, mission, and vision for comprehensive internationalization. Partnering with faculty, staff, and senior administrators, the Director will work to deepen the students’ academic experience through curricular integration of international opportunities.
Reporting to the Vice Provost for Global-Local Initiatives, the Director will: 1) provide leadership for the Study Abroad office, including staff management selection, training, evaluating, supervising and motivating staff, 2) oversee management and recruitment of University, affiliate, and exchange programs, 3) create general and specific emergency plans, train faculty and staff in emergency procedures, and directly manage complex international emergencies, 4) collaborate with faculty and partner providers to implement faculty-led, exchange, and affiliated programs, 5) represent LMU at relevant professional conferences or associations, and serve on university committees, and 6) collaborate on initiatives for international and study abroad students with relevant University departments, including the Office of International Students & Scholars. This is a twelve-month, non-faculty campus leadership position.
Qualifications and Application
LMU’s Director of Study Abroad will undertake managerial responsibilities including staff and budget oversight. By displaying a strong work ethic and an ability to inspire others, the Director will act in the best interests of LMU’s students, faculty, the institution, and its mission. Thus, collegiality and strong interpersonal skills are absolutely necessary to contribute to and lead in this important work. Highly developed organizational skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse team of professionals are also essential. Qualified candidates should be familiar with LMU’s mission, vision, and values, and possess knowledge of issues that impact higher education, including diversity and multiculturalism.
To serve as Director, typically a Master’s degree is required. Demonstrated ability to provide effective short-term and long-term vision and leadership in a changing higher education environment, ability to collaborate with university colleagues in the creation, growth, support, and management of Study Abroad programs, experience in international program administration, management experience leading a professional team including selection, training, evaluation, and motivation is required. Strong candidates will exhibit exemplary communication skills and an ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations of faculty, students, staff, parents, and international partners. Five or more years of proven leadership in international education programs or initiatives in a college or university setting is strongly preferred, significant overseas experience is desirable.
