Curricular and Research Computing (CRC) contributes to the academic mission of the College by providing programs and services that help the faculty and students easily and effectively use information technology in their teaching, learning and research. CRC staff routinely consult and collaborate with faculty on a range of resources from using the college’s course and content management systems to creating media rich curricular content to developing computational and digital projects in support of teaching and scholarship.
The Academic Technology Consultant - Computation and 3D Technologies provides hands-on services and support to faculty, students and relevant support staff in the appropriate use of technology to enhance teaching and learning. This position actively pursues knowledge of information technology applications appropriate to a liberal arts setting and collaborates with faculty and students on evaluating and supporting established as well as newly emerging web technologies. The ATC contributes to the provision of CRC services, especially the integration of visual representation, data manipulation and computation with teaching and learning, as well as works in coordination with other academic technology service points (including the Digital Media Studio and the Language Resource Center) to allocate CRC resources and provide a unified strategy for academic computational support.
This is a full time, full year position.
Maintain and support CRC’s equipment, including 3-D printers and scanners, drones, VR/AR hardware
Promote and provide support for data visualization in teaching, learning, and research across the curriculum
Provide technology assistance and instruction to faculty and students through direct consultation
Support the curricular and research computing needs of the Bates faculty
Contribute to the prototyping of curricular technology projects involving 3-D technologies
Work closely with Digital and Computational Studies faculty to ensure ongoing support for projects
Contribute to the support of cross-curricular projects in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences that involve computer programming, computational modeling, augmented and virtual reality applications, text analysis, and/or the analysis of large, complicated data sets
Share expertise and resources with faculty across the disciplines
Additional Job Functions:
Contribute to the coordination and promotion of CRC computing facilities and academic support services
Contribute to the administration of computing systems critical to campus teaching and learning initiatives (including learning management and content management systems)
Contribute to and develop workshops on relevant curricular technologies
Promote extracurricular use of CRC facilities, where appropriate, to provide informal opportunities for students to develop new competencies with computing technologies
Actively pursue professional development (by attending and presenting at regional and national workshops and conferences)
Other duties (including serving on departmental and campus working groups and committees) as assigned
The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant academic discipline, Master’s degree preferred.
The ideal candidate will have:
1-2 years, experience installing and managing software on Linux server platforms
1-2 years, experience staffing or managing user-focused technology facilities
Comfortable working with major computing operating systems (Windows, Mac OS, and Linux)
Knowledge of current data visualization practices in teaching, learning, and research across the curriculum
Knowledge of and facility with current 3-D modelling technologies
Knowledge of and facility with VR/AR hardware and platforms
Ability to communicate and work effectively with users of varied skill levels and interests
Strong presentation skills
Strong time, task, and project management skills
Ability to work independently and with flexibility to adapt to change required.
Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and work effectively with faculty and staff at all levels of the College.
Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships with students, staff, faculty and co-workers.
Excellent communication (written, verbal & listening) skills.
Excellent analytical and problem solving skills; ability to synthesize complex or diverse information.

Desirable Skills and Experience:
Proficiency in at least one programming language
The ability to use computational methods in solving data related problems
Experience with standard quantitative analysis methods and tools
Experience with academic projects involving quantitative analysis, visualization, or manipulation of large data sets
Experience with GIS
