The Department of Communication Studies at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse invites applicants for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Media Studies, to begin Fall 2019. Our department is one of the College of Liberal Studies’ largest academic units. Our curriculum has a student-centered orientation and emphasizes the importance of undergraduate research. UW-La Crosse is an ideal location for faculty members who seek to integrate their teaching, research, and service activities. We seek engaging teacher/scholars who can inspire students in Communication Studies.
Candidates for the appointment will have, or be near to completing, a doctorate degree in Communication by the start date (August 26, 2019) with a primary expertise in media technologies, digital media, emerging media, media analytics, or data studies. Degree must be earned by the first personnel review, no later than May 15, 2020. Preference will be given to candidates who are able to teach and develop courses focused on media technologies, multimedia design/production, data visualization, media analytics, media effects, media industries, media audiences, and/or media research and production. Preference will also be given to candidates whose methods are social scientific in nature, complementing the existing faculty in our Media Studies emphasis area. Teaching competency in current multimedia editing programs, such as Adobe Creative Cloud, digital publishing programs, social media analytic platforms, and other digital computing tools, is desirable.
Candidates will contribute to the department’s undergraduate research core, which includes courses in communication theory and methods that span the breadth of the discipline. Candidates will be comfortable teaching quantitative, qualitative, and critical methods to our students. Candidates will demonstrate effective teaching, preferably as an instructor of record, and preferably with two years experience. Candidates will also teach in our general education program, which includes CST 271: Media & Society and CST 110: Communicating Effectively. Candidates should specifically demonstrate their ability to teach a general education course on media and society.
The successful candidate will teach on a 9-month contract at the standard university load of 4 courses per semester.
