The Department of Communication at Western Carolina University invites applications for a tenure track assistant professor of communication and television broadcasting beginning in fall 2019.
The Assistant Professor of Communication – Television broadcasting will teach undergraduate courses in television production and related communication courses in the College of Arts and Sciences. Alongside concentrations in journalism, public relations, and health communication, this position supports the broadcast concentration, which includes digital media and design, single-camera production and post-production, and multicamera studio and remote production. The Department enrolls nearly 200 majors who are recognized for their active engagement in campus culture and contribution to the community through media production. In our project-based curriculum, students are encouraged to produce content for publication and submission to competitions, and each student completes a professional portfolio and capstone internship.
Responsibilities include teaching a 3/3 course load of media production courses to communication majors. Proficiency in digital cinematography, post-production and producing/directing single-camera production, and ability to teach editing in Premiere Pro are required. Ability to teach advanced courses in any of the following is desirable: video editing, digital design, audio production, or broadcast journalism. Expectations include developing and sustaining a scholarly agenda of creative and traditional scholarship and contributing to university, college, and departmental service.
Additional duties involve supporting equipment and studio operations, maintaining regular office hours, and advising students. The successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for teaching and engage in student-centered learning.
Our facilities include a state-of-the-art television studio designed, built, and under a service contract from Sony, which recently received an extensive one million-dollar upgrade. Located in Cullowhee, NC, WCU is situated in a beautiful valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains, a short drive west of Asheville and near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. From its 600-acre main campus, through programs in Asheville, at various community colleges, and online, WCU serves approximately 11,000 students.
Master's degree with 3-5 years full-time professional experience and some teaching experience. Proficiency with digital cinema cameras and Adobe Premiere Pro.
PhD or MFA (ABD considered). 3-5 years professional experience, university-level teaching experience, and expertise in camera use and Adobe Creative Suite products.
