The Division of Mass Communication is seeking applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor of Mass Communication, specifically to support the B.S. in Communications Arts degree program on Staten Island campus, commencing September 1, 2019.

The Communication Arts Program of the Division of Mass Communication is a120-credit program designed to prepare students entering a rapidly converging media world. Students are required to take courses in theory, production, writing for various media, media management, and aesthetics. This “generalist” approach prepares graduates to take advantage of ever-changing opportunities in the media industry. This position will include the duties of the director of the program on the Staten Island campus, who will, with the assistance of other program directors, oversee students interested in a variety of areas including: social and mobile media, media graphics, advertising, public relations, journalism, radio/recording industry, television and film.
This is a teaching focused position (teaching 12 credit hours per semester) with opportunities for a reduction in course load for research and for taking on the management of the programs on the Staten Island campus. This position will also include the directorship that requires participation in academic advisement, student mentoring, academic assessment and other activities as required by the Chair and/or Dean. Research, industry involvement and productivity are essential as is a strong commitment to student engagement and involvement in the Staten Island campus community.
A doctorate in mass communication or a closely related field is required. The ideal candidate should demonstrate active scholarship as well as knowledge of and experience in one or more of the related fields (mass media, journalism, advertising, public relations, film studies, visual culture, popular culture, and others). The candidate should have a strong research agenda in traditional and/or current trends such as multimedia, mass and/or interpersonal communication, applying data and social media. The candidate should be able to show a keen interest about the future of media along with the evolution of media technology and should demonstrate their teaching ability at the college level in or related to these areas. The candidate should be experienced and comfortable using contemporary instructional technologies.
