Departmental Overview The radio (and television) broadcast studios located at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism provide revenue to the School. North Gate Studios provides professional broadcast services for radio (and television) live and pre-recorded interviews- as well as podcasts. Clients include: radio broadcasters (NPR, BBC, CBC, KQED and various public public radio stations across the US) and podcast producers (Slate, Vox Media, UC's Science of Happiness and dozens of independent podcast producers). The Madeleine H. Russell Radio Studio features connectivity via ISDN and Comrex VoIP producing broadcast quality audio for remote in-studio interviews.
This position supports the studios manager to support client needs, coordinates and assists programs, processes, and facilities in radio (and television), including scheduling and engineering of live and prerecorded broadcast productions in the School of Journalism's studios. Part of every employee's job is to impart knowledge to students.The incumbent will be on call to provide engineering support to North Gate Studios.
Under general supervision, independently handles the successful engineering, production and delivery of audio studio recording sessions (both live and prerecorded).
Respond in a timely way to client scheduling requests; update calendar; may consult with client to assess details such as to confirm times or necessary resources.
May coordinate other engineers to cover bookings
Work with billing coordinator to clarify issues related to billing; keep session log updated, document changes to reservations.
Other duties as assigned.
Working knowledge and understanding of relevant technology, including methods of broadcast operations.
Working knowledge of the campus including its mission, vision, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
Requires knowledge of radio and/or television operations.
Excellent customer service and consultative skills to identify and implement required technology solutions.
Skills in studio set up, troubleshooting, and technical direction.
Experience with operating a studio mixing console/ board for local tracking sessions,
Experience with setup of various remote session scenarios (i.e- phoners; Experience with Skype, ISDN, Comrex or VoIP codecs are preferred, but not mandatory);
Experience with both prerecorded and live radio broadcast sessions;
Experience with how to properly mic up on-air talent in booth (i.e- host + 1 or 2 guests);
Proficient in post-session tasks (i.e- trim/mixdown, create .MP3 or WAV files)
Skills and knowledge in administrative processes;
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
Adobe Audition or similar audio editing software
