DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW UC San Diego Extension is fully self-supporting, operating year-round (12 months of active instruction) with a budget of $45 million annually in primarily fee income. The unit has over 200 career employees, including academic, management, staff and executive, as well as represented and non-represented positions. Many casual or contract employees and student workers also serve in the organization. In addition, Extension employs about 1,000 active by-agreement instructors.
Extension operates in 200,000 square feet of managed space, including a large off-campus classroom facility. The unit maintains a robust online learning platform, operating 24/7 (including some Spanish language elements) with web-casting and video-conferencing capability. Extension also a strong web presence with e-commerce operating 24/7. There are over 60,000 enrollment transactions annually; 35,000 outreach certification transactions and 25,000 service transactions. Extension supports a robust network of representatives, agents, and students (both residential and online) around the globe. Along with all of this, Extension operates two television stations, a variety of public lecture programs and is active in federal, state, local, and private research and technical assistance programs and activities.
POSITION OVERVIEW The Research Data Analyst will provide technical, research, and analytical skills, applied programming, and data modeling and management in support of the UCSD Extension Healthcare Research and Policy department. Specifically, the position will require advanced statistical, computational, and data analysis work on internal and external research grants that involve analysis of both structured and unstructured data.
The incumbent will apply data, programming, systems engineering, and information management concepts to conduct scientific research for healthcare, public health, and data science projects. Works on data of high scope and complexity where analyses of situations or data require a review of a variety of factors. Participates in the creation and implementation of applied mathematical models analyzing structured and unstructured data, building data collection and management applications, translating findings to research results, and developing manuscripts and abstracts for scientific presentation.
The Research data Analyst designs and implements capture of metadata from technical processes such as machine learning, deep learning, topic models, natural language processing, and database management. Extracts data from multiple data sources and integrates with other secondary data layers and other sources. Analyzes and models data with the aim to provides actionable insights to collaborating teams to aid processes within the institution and will also work on visualization projects to create institutional and research-based dashboard development.

Demonstrated working research experience with applied mathematical statistical methods, machine learning models, deep learning, topic models, and natural language processing incorporating a broad range of study designs and traditional and modern statistical approaches.
Proven experience drafting, editing, and finalizing written interpretation of data science and statistical methods and results of research project, in a manner suitable for research abstracts, presentations, and journal publication.
Demonstrated experience reading complex scientific literature in the computer science, engineering, and health sciences field, understanding appropriate study and data collection design, formulating appropriate statistical and study hypotheses, and proposing appropriate statistical and data science methods to address multidisciplinary research questions.
Advanced and applied experience in database management and analysis including sql, nosql, pandas, jupyter-notebook and data visualization packages. Additional experience in using a common scripting language (e.g. Python, R) to access (database, MongoDB, csv json APIs, web scraping), clean, and cross-reference data.
Advanced programming experience in multiple programming languages including C, C+, Java, and Python as well as familiarity
