The New School is looking for a passionate middle school art and technology educator to join a highly collaborative, creative faculty and who will work to inspire a love of art and a facility with technology in our middle school students. Responsibilities include teaching 5th - 6th grade art, 5-6th MS technology, semester-long art elective classes, including graphic design and Digital-Media Art, semester-long technology classes, serving as a middle school advisor, and participating in all aspects of the life of a middle school (chaperoning trips, dances, and other duties). The successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for guiding and connecting with middle school students, facility with technology integration in our 1:1 environment, willingness to work within an interdisciplinary program, and a commitment to ongoing professional growth. The New School promotes experiential and cooperative learning, field experiences outside of school, and integrated curriculum. All faculty participate in overnight trips with students. As a progressive school, we expect all employees to embrace whole child education, inquiry-based practices, educating for democracy, and experiential learning pedagogies. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated use of a variety of teaching methods to support different learning styles and academic skills, as well as have successful experience teaching art.
Responsibilities of the Art & Technology Teacher:
Teach art and technology classes and plan engaging field experiences.
Develop course curricula aligned to learning standards, create engaging lesson plans with defined learning objectives, and provide support to students in and out of class.
Develop positive, professional, and gracefully playful rapport with students and a positive relationship with colleagues.
Maintain current and detailed documentation for all students, including information related to grading, behavior, attendance, etc.
Implement a broad range of teaching methods and employ an engaging repertoire of instruction; design authentic assessments.
Work closely with team to develop lessons, cross curricular activities and integrated curriculum.
Write reports, student comments, and meet with administrators to support the students.
Communicate proactively with administrators, colleagues, and parents as necessary concerning student engagement and performance.
Research current trends in art and technology content and instruction appropriate to different learning needs.
Identify and participate in professional development activities and opportunities that sharpen teaching skills and broaden knowledge.
Ensure the safety and well being of all students in the school.
Bachelor’s degree in art, art education, technology, or related field.
Minimum of 3 years of experience as a teacher at the middle grades preferred.
Strong interest and skills in collaborating with faculty, staff, admin, and parents.
Strong verbal and writing skills.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and follow-through.
Positive attitude, flexible approach, and a sense of humor.
Interest to contribute to school community outside of the classroom as a coach, student advisor, student club leader, or other duties as assigned
Must be authorized to work in the U.S. and hold a current driver’s license
