The Simulation Center is dedicated to support the growing use of patient simulation technology throughout medical education and professional practice. It provides consultative and supportive services for curriculum development, innovative instructional strategies, assessment methods, and faculty development in simulations.
Summary of Job
The Medical Simulation Specialist will provide support for all simulation operations, including preparation, maintenance and repair of full-body patient simulators (software and hardware), task trainers and related multimedia peripherals.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as simulator operator by creating, testing, and running scenarios with faculty instructors assuring that the simulator is in good working condition prior to the start of all simulations.
Maintain cleanliness of the simulation center.
Manages the room set-up and clean-up for clinical simulations and debriefings; accountable for having he room propos, equipment, and other resources prepared for the scheduled simulation center activities.
Works closely with faculty to ensure the smooth operation of multiple educational activities that involve the overall organization of work flow in the simulation center.
Provides information to faculty, staff, students and visitors concerning the functions of the simulation center.
Meet with new potential users of the Sim Center to identify needed equipment, supplies, and potential space to accommodate teaching session.
Utilized online tools for schedules, training sessions, classes, workshops, and other activities.
Maintain competence in bedside patient care equipment.
Pushing and lifting materials overhead.
Participate when needed at external/outer site simulation (Institution), coordinating equipment transport, and support teaching event.
Play a role in simulation teaching when needed. (Confederate)
Schedule flexibility-sometimes required to work early or late hours.
Occasional weekend events. (Not often)
Serve as backup to Multimedia Services Manager for the use of digital media and provide backup technical support for computer based multimedia systems and their components, including operating digital camera, video cameras, monitors, LCD displays, and other equipment.
Understand the use and operation of different simulator technologies ranging from anatomic models and task trainers to screen-based simulation to full-body patient simulators and virtual reality surgical simulators.
Maintain proficiency in existing and emerging simulation technologies, including basic theory, design and implementation.
Participate in technical training as necessary; attend conferences to stay current with simulation technology.
Conduct routine inventory updates
Interface with the equipment manufacturers regarding equipment troubleshooting and systems problems; maintain record of repairs.
Train faculty and other Simulation Center staff in the operational aspects of simulation.
Communicate in a positive, professional manner with faculty instructors, students and other users of the Simulation Center.
Education & Experience
High school diploma required
Some knowledge of health care related clinical patient care
Strong interpersonal, leadership and organizational skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong problem-solving skills in working with various faculty members and students from different program levels
Able to maintain confidentiality, display diplomacy, be self-directed, and manage multiple tasks and projects concurrently with frequent interruptions
Strong technical and computer skills
Strong customer service skills are essential and applicants must enjoy working with people
EMT,CNA or similar allied health related experience
Experience with medical simulation training
Experience supporting faculty in an academic environment
The Johns Hopkins Medicine Simulation Center strives to be a leader in teaching the importance of emergency readiness and in order to lead by example, we require that the person who accepts this positon take the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (i.e., CPR) class and maintain certification by taking the class every 2 years or ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) not required at the acceptance of positon, but it will work towards certification in the near future once the position becomes fulfilled.
