WGBH’s Education group comprises four departments: Production, First 8 Labs/Media Engagement, Editorial, and Policy/Strategic Development. The group produces, distributes, and supports media and curriculum content for teachers, caretakers, parents, and children. The departments work alongside Digital Learning group, which oversees WGBH’s partnership in PBS LearningMedia, and with Children’s Media and National Programs to provide guidance on the development and production of content for formal learning and outreach use.
WGBH Education seeks an experienced senior manager to serve as Director of Social Studies Education. This position will provide leadership and vision in the ongoing planning, development, review and evaluation of WGBH Education’s Social Studies and Civics activities, including related PBS LearningMedia’s PreK-12 resources. Reporting to the Director of Digital Learning and working closely with the Executive Director of Education, Director of Strategy, and other senior leaders of WGBH Education.
Play a key role in developing and advancing WGBH Education’s K-12 Social Studies Content Strategy for PBS LearningMedia;
Serve as Social Studies/Civics curriculum thought partner for other WGBH Education initiatives;
Lead the strategy and development of instructional models and professional development programming that supports the integration of digital media for Social Studies/Civics instruction and learning;
Assure WGBH Education’s Social Studies resources meet the needs of diverse, K-12 students and their teachers;
Inform research and evaluation of WGBH’s digital Social Studies resources and translate into best practices for our PBSLM Social Studies instructional models and PD programming;
Align work with current best-practices and standards in Social Studies and Civics Education;
Develop innovative strategies for the integration of original, and emerging formats, WGBH broadcast brands and web-based programs into innovative digital learning resources for teachers and students;
Provide curriculum writers with a structured framework by which to understand Social Studies/Civics digital learning content needs and instructional models
Work closely with producers, curriculum writers, subject matter experts, game developers and engineers, instructional design, project managers and staff from other departments
As appropriate, manage development costs to budget
Correlate educational materials to national and state curriculum standards.
Write, edit, (track, when appropriate), and review manuscript and digital products through development cycle.
Communicate with fellow team members about project progress, and develop solutions to address challenges that arise.
Contribute to WGBH Education Development efforts and manage selected projects as appropriate.
Participate in dissemination and communication to partner and stakeholder audiences.
Contribute to new project development, helping other department senior team members with conceptualization, grant-writing, and other development activities, as assigned.
Establish and maintain relationships between WGBH Education and key organizations and thought leaders in social studies and civics education
Provide staff development in best practices in social studies education content and pedagogical approaches.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Must be results-oriented with an eye on the big picture but also attentive to detail.
S/he must also be able to manage multiple activities and functional groups, both internal and external to WGBH, to deliver on time and on budget with the highest level of quality.
