In this position, you will identify newsworthy stories about clinical care, community programs and scientific research. You will specifically support UCLA Health's innovation activities and the Institute for Precision Health for outreach to external and internal audiences across a variety of publishing platforms.
You will work closely with a team of media relations specialists to identify newsworthy topics and angles likely to generate public and media interest. You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to coordinate media opportunities and develop and publish online content.
This position requires a strong interest and knowledge of trends in health care, clinical care, medical science research and, more specifically, health technology and innovation. The position requires a proven ability to translate complex subjects for a general audience. It also requires the ability to cultivate relationships with clinicians, faculty, researchers and staff, as well as the news media.
Outstanding written and oral communications skills. Demonstrated record of successful national, regional and local media relations planning, implementation and placement. Extensive media contacts at key local, California and national media. Demonstrated reporting and writing skills that meet journalistic codes and are suitable for publications, newspapers, magazine and broadcast on radio, television and social media. Ability to collaborate with freelance photographers and videographers to produce visuals, including photos and/or video, that accompany press releases. Demonstrated skills in journalistic writing and interpreting medical and scientific information for general readers. Demonstrated ability to successfully coordinate multiple ongoing tasks and responsibilities of varying degrees of complexity simultaneously. Demonstrated skill in creating and managing a comprehensive media relations plan, including handling multiple media inquiries simultaneously. Demonstrated computer and smartphone literacy; experience with social media. Strong knowledge and understanding of current events, issues and developments in the subject areas of health care and medical research. Knowledge of other issues in assigned 'beat areas'. Specific knowledge of topics involving the role of technology and innovation in influencing and improving medical care. Ability to serve rotating on-call duties 24/7 and work nights and weekends, when needed. Demonstrated record of implementing new technologies and new communication tools; including use of both still and video cameras. Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education strongly preferred Minimum of 5 years full-time experience on the staff of a newspaper, radio, TV station, in-house PR team or PR agency required. Ability to understand and speak at a level of conversational Spanish preferred. Experience in crisis and disaster communications, including preparation of background materials preferred.
