The School of Media and Communication at Bowling Green State University invites applicants for a tenure-track assistant professor in sports journalism/public relations. The ideal candidate will contribute to the growth of the sports journalism/media program, teach undergraduate courses in sports journalism/public relations, and teach courses such ethics, law, video journalism, sports reporting, interactive media, and coding and graduate courses. The School of Media and Communication is one of 17 academic units in the College of Arts and Sciences. The School currently has 31 full-time faculty with national and/or international reputations, and 600 undergraduate majors and 60 graduate students. Undergraduates pursue baccalaureate degrees in Communication, Media Production and Studies, and Journalism and engage in a variety of student media groups including: The BG News, the student newspaper; BG-24 News, a live television newscast; WBGU-FM, a radio station that broadcasts throughout NW Ohio; and The Obsidian, a quarterly publication featuring diversity issues. Graduate students can pursue MA or PhD degrees in Media and Communication.
The School of Media and Communication is housed in the Kuhlin Center. The Kuhlin Center is a unique production facility that sets a standard for education in a production control room environment. Production spaces include a 1,740 sq. ft. studio equipped with an Electronic Theatre Control board, LED lighting and green cyc. There are multiple Grass Valley studio cameras, some of which are equipped for robotic operation. The 600 sq. ft. Production Control room is furnished with a Grass Valley Karrera switcher, Ross Trackless Studio with Virtual Sets for news, sports, weather and talk show applications. The Kuhlin Center also has a 300 sq. ft. Insert Studio, a 900 sq. ft. Audio Recording Studio, two student managed Radio Stations, and a Convergence Lab all which are patchable to the Production Control Room for diverse applications. • A terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D.) in Journalism, Mass Communication, Public Relations, or related field (e.g., advertising, communication, media). ABDs will be considered as long as the requirements for the degree are completed by August 2020.
• College-level teaching experience in journalism, public relations, advertising or a related area (e.g., video production, digital media).
• Demonstrated experience with emergent media technologies such as data-driven journalism, interactive journalism/public relations, web development or digital story-telling
• Demonstrated scholarly activity (at least two research presentations at a national or regional conference; one or more published or in press journal articles in peer reviewed journalism or communication journals; or one or more book chapters in an edited scholarly volume).
• Demonstrated research, teaching or professional background in sports journalism, sports public relations or sport communication
