The University of Kentucky (UK) seeks a Director of the School of Journalism and Media (JAM). Anticipated start date for the selected candidate is August 2020. Reporting to the Dean of the College of Communication and Information, the Director serves on the college leadership team and works collaboratively with the leadership of the other academic units within the college that include the School of Information Science, the Department of Communication, the Department of Integrated Strategic Communication and the Graduate Program in Communication.
As the highest ranking academic and administrative officer in the School, the Director provides academic leadership and administers both of the undergraduate programs, staff and budgets. The successful candidate must have an advanced degree in a related discipline (earned doctorate preferred), national recognition, excellent teaching credentials, leadership skills, management experience, a record of supporting external funding and fundraising experience. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated appreciation for and understanding of the importance of the First Amendment as well as an eye toward the future of journalism and media studies, which will include new technology, convergence and business models. The successful candidate should also have a record of, and continuing commitment to, scholarly or creative activity and professional achievement commensurate with appointment as a tenured full professor in the School.
The Director will be expected to demonstrate commitment to the School's multi-track academic appointment system and will demonstrate leadership with accreditation processes involving the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC). The Director will be a dynamic leader with the ability to champion change and continuous improvement in a rapidly changing digital media landscape. The successful candidate must bring the ability to foster a learning environment and work culture that is inclusive to a diverse student body, faculty, staff, alumni and other stakeholders throughout the University and across the Commonwealth.
The School of Journalism and Media is recognized at UK and across the globe for its accomplishments in academic scholarship and professional areas. The School offers BA and BS degrees in two areas of study – journalism (print/multimedia, broadcast/multimedia) and media arts and studies. The School also participates in the graduate program of the college that includes the MA and Ph.D. in Communication.
Students learn first-hand working at the award-winning Kentucky Kernel newspaper, KRNL Lifestyle and Fashion magazine and the Kentucky Kernel Year in Photos. Also, there are great opportunities at WRFL, WUKY and the Student News Network, our award-winning student newscast.
The school also promotes the free flow of information through its Scripps Howard First Amendment Center. Since 1981, the school has been the home of the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame. The Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues also operates within the school.
The JAM curriculum effectively balances hands-on application with current and emerging theoretical research. Graduates are prepared for careers in multimedia news broadcasting and reporting, media management, media studies and sound, video and multimedia production. All students are required to complete an internship as part of their studies. JAM faculty are innovators outside of the traditional classroom and leaders in research.
The College of Communication and Information is composed of two schools (The School of Journalism and Media, School of Information Science), two departments (Department of Communication, Department of Integrated Strategic Communication) and an interdisciplinary graduate program. Nearly 1,700 undergraduate majors and 350 graduate students are led by more than 80 full-time faculty, who also teach in the university's core curriculum and serve students perusing minors and certificates in the College. The College also houses UK's independent student newspaper, The Kentucky Kernel, and the defending national championship Intercollegiate Debate Team.
