The successful candidate is expected to excel in teaching and service, and make outstanding and recognized contributions to the development of the discipline of statistics and its pedagogy. This is a full-time faculty position, designed for individuals who wish to focus on the development and implementation of novel teaching strategies in statistics, professional activities, and service to the university and the academic community. The successful candidate is expected to contribute actively to the development of a modern statistical curriculum, at the bachelor and master levels, for the recently formed Department of Statistics of the Baskin School of Engineering. We seek candidates that are passionate about teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. Candidates for this position should have direct experience in the application of sophisticated statistical methods to the solution of real life problems. A preferred qualification is the ability to perform statistical consulting in an academic context.
The department of Statistics was established in 2018 by the statistics group of the former Applied Mathematics and Statistics Department, that has been present on campus since 2001. The group has a longstanding tradition of collaborative work for the development of statistical methods pertinent to data-driven problems in science and engineering. The department oversees a curriculum that includes classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels that are relevant campus-wide. This incorporates classes covering a wide spectrum, ranging from non-calculus based statistical reasoning courses to advanced topic classes in statistical theory, modeling and inference. The department hosts a minor in statistics, and a graduate program leading to MS and PhD degrees in Statistical Science. Responsibilities of the Assistant Teaching Professor position comprise of: teaching within this curriculum, including classes in Bayesian and classical statistical methods; developing novel teaching strategies and expanding the course offerings; training and oversight of graduate teaching assistants and graduate student instructors; and supervising master level projects.

The campus comprises two thousand acres of forested hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Monterey Bay with one of the most visually spectacular settings in higher education. The UCSC Silicon Valley Campus is located in the heart of Silicon Valley near San Jose, the worldwide epicenter for industry and innovation in games and information technology. The location affords extensive consulting opportunities and avenues for collaborative research with industry. Opened in 2016, the UCSC Silicon Valley Campus features contemporary interior design with multiple classrooms, computer labs, and project rooms, along with an event center and television studio.
ACADEMIC TITLE Assistant Teaching Professor (Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment) The Assistant Teaching Professor title confers the rights and responsibilities of membership in the Academic Senate, and has the payroll title Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employments (LPSOE). An LPSOE is eligible for promotion to ``Security Employment', which is analogous to tenure.
SALARY Commensurate with qualifications and experience; academic year (nine-month basis).
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Ph.D (or equivalent foreign degree) in Statistics, Biostatistics, or related field and demonstrated teaching experience. It is expected that the degree requirement will be completed by the 30th of June, 2020.
POSITION AVAILABLE July 1, 2020, with the academic year beginning in September 2020. All Ph.D. degree requirements must be met by June 30, 2021 for employment beyond that date.
