Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q) invites applications for a Public Services Librarian with an anticipated start date of August 1st, 2020. This position is in the Library at NU-Q. Northwestern University’s first international campus is a media school grounded in the liberal arts and housed in one of the most advanced and well-equipped communication facilities in the world. The Public Services Librarian supports the information, research, teaching, and learning needs of the NU-Q community. The Public Services Librarian, in collaboration with other NU-Q and Northwestern University librarians, is responsible for the development and implementation of a robust student and faculty engagement program, including activities such as information literacy, assessment, research and reference, user experience and outreach. This position serves as the primary liaison with one or more NU-Q academic programs, such as Communications and Journalism. The position is a full-time, non-tenure eligible appointment at the rank of Librarian Faculty.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leads library’s public access services. This includes public access operations, policy development, service desk activities and schedules, student assistant coordination and other public services as required.
Coordinates, creates and delivers reference and information literacy services for the library. This includes developing and maintaining curriculum research support, one-on-one research consultations, access materials, instructional programs and customized content for liaison needs and the university at large.
Serves as library liaison to one or more academic departments.
Assesses, recommends and develops patron services and the user experience.
Manages outreach initiatives and materials for the library. This includes creating and maintaining subject guides, library web pages, social media content, displays and library print materials.
Performs content selection for academic departments. This includes as liaison and in support of the technical services librarian’s overall collection development and management activities.
increasingly integrated services with library systems and learning management systems.
Participates in the overall planning, decision-making, and innovation of NU-Q Library services and programs.
May coordinate activities with non-academic departments and administrative teams.
Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:
A Master’s degree in Library/Information Science accredited by an internationally recognized library association (e.g. ALA, ALIA), or the equivalent combination of education and relevant library experience
A minimum of three years professional library experience in an academic or research setting, or the equivalent combination of relevant experience
Experience with research support, student engagement, outreach and/or instruction in an academic library
Experience in access services, information services, and/or collection development
Strong written and oral communication skills
Knowledge of library instruction and information literacy standards
Knowledge of various library search, discovery and fulfillment systems
Demonstrated collection development experience
Knowledge of user-based methodologies to support the improvement of library user experience
Customer service focus and experience
Ability to promote library services and engage library users
Excellent oral/written English communication and presentation skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:
Experience with instructional and educational technologies, including learning management systems
Experience supporting library users with alternative accessibility or curricular accommodation needs
Knowledge of the publishing cycle, including for-profit and/or open access and/or textbooks
International library experience
Demonstrated analytical planning capabilities
Advanced degree or demonstrable knowledge in the disciplines of communication, media, journalism and/or strategic communications
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with all types of users
Ability to multi-task library projects with minimal supervision in a team environment.
Awareness of current trends and developments in academic libraries and library technology in higher education
Excellent organizational skills
