Working independently under the general supervision of the Manager of the Media Technology Unit, the incumbent designs, develops, fabricates, installs, maintains, repairs and calibrates complex automated television and audio/video electronic media systems and devices installed throughout the UC Santa Cruz campus in general assignment classrooms, videoconference and distance education facilities, the cable and IPTV television systems and similar installations.
The incumbent also independently leads the design and installation of such facilities, drawing on extensive expertise in audio, video and IT engineering to develop creative, effective systems that address the specific needs of clients. This includes researching emerging technologies, components and practices, evaluating them for their suitability to given tasks and adapting them to the tasks at hand.
The incumbent serves frequently as technical leader in a team environment, prioritizing and assigning work to other engineers, striving to provide outstanding customer service in a timely fashion, and communicating regularly and effectively with customers, stakeholders and colleagues.
Advanced knowledge of audio, video and control systems, including architectural and cabling requirements.
Extensive working knowledge of TCP/IP data networking concepts and their application in television and audio/video control and distribution systems.
Advanced knowledge of and ability in designing, installing and maintaining complex electronic multimedia and audio/video systems.
Advanced knowledge of presentation facilities design.
Experience, ability and skills necessary to quickly and successfully troubleshoot electronic devices to the component level.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to nontechnical individuals of various backgrounds and education in both daily operations and in user training.
Extensive knowledge of electronics theory and technology.
Extensive knowledge of standard devices and practices used in the audiovisual industry for interconnection of components and systems.
Extensive knowledge of video and television transmission standards.
Extensive knowledge of computer video standards and technology.
Knowledge of and ability to effectively use Macintosh and Windows-based computers, operating systems, peripherals, application software including AutoCAD, spreadsheets and email for the work environment.
Strong interpersonal skills which promote mutual respect and professional interactions.
Ability to effectively use a wide variety of standard electronics test equipment to solve technical malfunctions.
Knowledge of electronic soldering techniques and ability to solder devices on printed circuit boards cleanly and efficiently without causing damage or cold solders.
Ability to comprehend, interpret and relay technical or procedural information with clarity and accuracy.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics.
Ability to effectively lead groups and individuals in a fast-paced multicultural environment.
