The UCLA Institute for Technology, Law and Policy, a collaboration between UCLA School of Law and the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, is now accepting fellowship applications for the academic years 2020-2022. This fellowship is a full-time, two-year academic position at UCLA School of Law with a start date of July 1, 2020 and end date of June 30, 2022.
The position primarily involves sustained research and writing on the legal, social, economic, and political implications of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. The position will also involve teaching and assisting with Institute projects, such as conferences and workshops. The Fellow's research will culminate in the authorship of papers suitable for publication in law journals or other respected legal, scholarly, and policy outlets. Throughout, the Fellow will work in collaboration with UCLA faculty.
The UCLA Institute for Technology, Law and Policy was established in 2020 to perform cross-disciplinary research on the ways that new and emerging technologies affect society, privacy, law and public policy. Supported by a five-year, $10.25 million grant, the institute brings together faculty and students from the law and engineering schools to conduct research, convene events and engage the wider academic community and the public about the benefits and risks of technologies including artificial intelligence and machine learning, robotics, cybersecurity and digital media and communications. These and other rapidly evolving technologies pose questions ranging from ethical and public policy issues to the applicability and utility of current laws and regulations to govern their use.
The Institute is one of a number of UCLA programs focused on the intersection of technology and policy. Related programs include UCLA Law's AI PULSE project and Climate Engineering Governance Project, as well as UCLA Samueli Engineering's UCLA Connection Lab and the UCLA Engineering-led Named Data Networking.
Candidates for the fellowship should possess a J.D., Ph.D., or other advanced academic degree, a strong academic record, excellent analytical and writing skills, and demonstrated interest or background in the fields of law and technology, including but not limited to artificial intelligence. All post-graduate degrees should be awarded no later than June 30, 2020. Candidates with previous academic, research, or professional experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer science, or related fields of science and technology are especially encouraged to apply. The salary is anticipated to be approximately $85,000 per year plus a competitive benefits package.
