The Southold Union Free School District, located in the hamlet of Southold, a north fork community of Suffolk County, Long Island, about 90 miles from New York City, is seeking a K-12 Superintendent of Schools.
The Southold Union Free School District serves approximately 800 students in two schools, including an elementary school and a junior/senior high school. The Southold school district, known for its academic innovation and its ability to incorporate practical learning experiences, offers a broad and challenging curriculum in the humanities, social sciences, sciences, mathematics, technology, and the visual and performing arts. Southold hosts an award winning Robotics team, a working broadcast television studio, and an ROTC program. In addition, the school maintains a garden and greenhouse that allows students to plant, cultivate, and harvest fresh produce every year as part of their curriculum. Furthermore, Southold students are accepted to a wide array of colleges and universities.
The Southold community supports its school district as evidenced by the recent Bond Referendum that was approved by the voters as well as consistent support for the school district budget. Stakeholders are committed to excellence, to a student-centered philosophy, and to enhancing an already successful school district and community.
Recently, parents, students, staff, and members of the community were invited to describe the strengths of the school district. Among the most frequent responses were:
A school district that prides itself on its many innovative programs
A district committed to excellence
An excellent staff, eager to participate meaningfully in improving the schools and district
A school community that is reflective of the richness and culture of the world
Buildings and grounds that have been well maintained and are attractive looking
A community that has routinely supported the school district budget
The Board of Education, based upon input from constituents in the Southold school district community, recently approved the following as the “specifications” for the Superintendent search:

A strong instructional and collaborative “hands on” leader who has been a teacher and an administrator, with experience in bringing a growing diverse student body to higher levels of academic success

An administrator with proven success in building trust among the multiple stakeholders of a school community as well as communities with whom the district has ongoing partnerships
A skillful communicator who utilizes multiple means of keeping the Board of Education and the district stakeholders informed about the status of school district programs, activities, and decisions
