The Instructional Technologist is part of the School of Medicine (SOM) Office of Online Education team. The Instructional Technologist supports digital pedagogy and the production of digital learning assets, as well as the academic and professional development needs of SOM faculty members.
The instructional Technologist reports to the Director of Online Education and works closely with OOE staff as well as with faculty, learners, and staff throughout SOM and the Johns Hopkins University.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
The primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Support the design, creation, and revision of online learning and training materials, including multimedia assets
Manage green-screen video studio and mobile video recording assets
Record and edit instructor videos including didactic formats, lab/procedural videos, and clinical care demonstrations
Assist Instructional Designers and multimedia staff in developing supplemental, blended, and fully online courses adhering to organizational standards
Provide instructional technology/design support to projects and personnel within SOM
Research and evaluate instructional technology resources and their effectiveness
Work with the instructional designers and multimedia staff to pilot technology-based learning materials
Assist with the design and delivery of online, hybrid, and face-to-face instructional technology/design training
Create user and other documentation as needed, including reference and job aids
Support the Office of Online Education and senior leadership in the creation and management of course materials, including syllabi and assessment data
Provide 1st tier LMS user support (Blackboard and Docebo)
Collaborate and consult with other distance education and instructional design and technology staff at Johns Hopkins and other universities
Minimum Qualifications (Required)
Bachelor’s degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, or related field,
Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in course design and development, faculty training, or program/course assessment/evaluation required.
Additional education may substitute for experience, and additional experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *
Graduate degree preferred.
Experience with the Adobe suite and Final Cut Pro preferred.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The Instructional Technologist will be a self-motivated, organized, and detail-oriented team player who is capable of participating in collaborative instructional development processes and activities and able to work independently, and has strong intellectual and analytical skills. The ideal candidate will possess an in-depth understanding of instructional technology issues related to learning in online, hybrid/blended, and traditional courses, as well as experience using a wide range of hardware and software tools to develop multimedia assets and learning materials.

Ability to produce professional digital media assets, including videos, audio, animation, and screencasts, podcasts based on client needs.
Basic web skills including knowledge of HTML/HTML5
Experience with Learning Management Systems (Blackboard preferred).
Understanding of pedagogical issues related to adult learning
Experience with training and staff development.
