The Outside Plant Technician is responsible for providing effective design, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining fiber to the home outside plant, including fiber optic cables, taps and associated equipment. The Outside Plant Technician performs fusion fiber splicing, OTDR and light testing, tap installation and/or replacements, installation, service, and documentation of triple-play data, voice, and video fiber services when required. The Outside Plan Technician will perform the responsibilities of this position through the utilization of necessary test equipment, hand tools, computers and telecommunications-based tools, while providing excellent customer service.

Perform all necessary activities in the walkout, installation, maintenance, repair and ongoing operations of the outside fiber plant used to deliver residential services.
Assist the Field Services Manager with field walkout, installation, maintenance, and repair of commercial accounts and plant extensions.
Clearly and effectively communicate with customers and co-workers. Must be able to work independently and maintain accurate documentation with all required paperwork.
Understand and utilize safety and protective equipment.
Properly use and keep in good working order all trucks, tools and assigned equipment.
Must be able to climb poles with hooks if required and effectively operate bucket truck and related equipment as required for the position.
Must be able to acquire and maintain any certifications required for operating fiber equipment or working on aerial and buried fiber optic cable.
Perform computer data entry, including maintenance task, installation, and fiber documentation.
Attend training and/or courses relating to area of work (overnight stays may be required). Daytime hours may fluctuate, and some evening and Saturday hours may be required to support the business needs of United Services.
Provide efficient, courteous service to customers and the general public.

This position has no supervisory responsibility of personnel.
This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing poles. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 75 pounds. This position requires the ability to work in high spaces including, but not limited to, bucket trucks, ladders, roofs, attics, and/or crawlspaces. This position must be able to work inside and outside in inclement weather, including extreme heat and cold.
This is a full-time position. This position will primarily report to the Savannah office but may occasionally be required to report to the Cameron office, Maryville office and/or Excelsior Springs office. The position will be required to travel during the workday throughout the service area. Standard days of work are Monday through Friday and hours are depending on business needs. This position must be able to work flexible hours outside normal business hours, including overtime, weekends and holidays as required. This position also requires the ability to be “on-call” as assigned. Occasional Saturday shifts working overtime may be required as needed depending on business needs. This position is required to work outside in inclement weather at any time.

Required Education and Experience:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Experience: One to two years of experience with OTDR operation, light testing, fiber troubleshooting, and/or fiber plant design.
Skills: Common knowledge of consumer computer equipment/router devices, as well as telephone, television, and related home electronics; working knowledge of hand and power tools; must be able to climb poles with hooks.
Must be able to respond to service outages within 15 – 30 minutes as required; have or acquire a thorough knowledge of first aid and CPR;
Must have (or acquire) and maintain a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL).
Preferred Education and Experience:
Education: Trade School training and/or certification
Experience: Two or more years of previous experience with OTDR operation, light testing, fiber troubleshooting, and/or fiber plant design.
